Tundra Ecology Arctic and alpine shrub research

We are a plant ecology research group that studies the influence of warming climate on tundra vegetation in northern ecosystems. In particular, we investigate the spread of willows and other shrub species into Arctic and alpine tundra. Shrubs have the potential to restructure tundra ecosystems by changing ecosystem functions and creating feedbacks to climate warming that could further the increase of shrubs. Invasive Species, recycled mixed media, 2008-2012. Made entirely of recycled materials such as tar paper, pond liner, cheap beer cans, and speaker wire; this series replicates various invasive weed species in the state of Washington and sites them in their imagined habitats in both rural and urban environments. Blackberries, morning glory, ivy, crabgrass, and kudzu sprout from cracks and emerge from crevices, stealthily laying claim to landscape. Have colonized The Last Chance Travel Agency.

16 X 16 oil on linen. I consider myself fortunate to have a myriad of artists with whom to paint, talk art, critique, etc. At a recent gathering with fellow plein air painters,. My art career started when I got noticed as a certain kind of genre painter. I mostly painted scenes of quaint French villages, the Tuscan hillside, elegant cafes, and bustling restaurant interiors.
